Australia increases imports of American hardwoods

There was been a significant growth in exports of US hardwood lumber to Australia in 2020. The increase in volume of hardwood lumber totalled 11% YOY. The most popular species, American white oak, saw a 3% increase to 17,035 cubic metres but American red oak figures reveal a remarkable 91% increase in the same period. Source: Timberbiz

American red oak has been widely promoted by the American Hardwood Export Council in Australia in recent years and has caught the eye of many specifiers and designers for its versatility and value relative to its sister species.

“We are very happy to see American red oak’s popularity with the Australian design and architecture communities grow,” Rod Wiles, Regional Director for AHEC said.

“It is the most abundant species in the American hardwood forest which is a proven sustainable resource.

“It’s readily available, stains well, works well and can be thermally modified. It’s suitable for a vast range of applications which is something that the savvy Australian specifiers have noted”.
