Pilgrimage to the Mount

FIFTY YEARS ago Mount Gambier hosted a large contingent of Timber Merchants to the region, led by many industry leaders who went on to bring Hoo-Hoo to Australia. Now a tour, “Come and See’ has been organized to commemorates the vision of those past leaders and honour them.
Mount Gambier Timber Industry Club 214 (affiliated with the International Order of Hoo-Hoo) welcomes you to ‘Come and See’ for yourself. The Forest Industries have changed markedly nationally and in this important region with around 30% of Australia’s forest plantation of Radiata Pine and Blue Gum.
“Come and See’ is your opportunity to see these changes in mills and in forests and to meet the dynamic locals driving local enterprises today.
This event is arranged by Mount Gambier Timber Industry Club 214 in conjunction with the Timber Merchants Association (Victoria)
Tour Itinerary
DAY 1 – Monday March 21st, 2011. World Forestry Day.
• Coffee and croissants at TMA (Victoria), Unit 1, 180 Whitehorse Road,
Blackburn, Victoria 3130.
• Tour briefing
• Meet Tour Captains, Lew Parsons, Phillip Blackwell and Peter Roberts.
• Depart by superior coach from the TMA, Melbourne
• First Stop: McVilly’s treatment plant in Beaufort
• Lunch. To be advised
• Inspect Hardwood plantations in the Hamilton region.
• Arrive at Mount Gambier.
Accommodation. The Southgate Motel, Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier.

DAY 2 – Tuesday March 22nd, 2011.
􀂃 Depart from Southgate Motel after breakfast.
􀂃 Site visit to Gunns at Tarpeena.
􀂃 Site visit to harvesting of Radiata Pine and Blue Gums.
􀂃 Lunch at Nangwarry Timber Museum.
􀂃 Site visit to Carter Holt Harvey Lakeside.
􀂃 Barbecue Dinner at Umpherston Cave. This historic area is adjacent to Forestry
SA HQ and CHH Mill.
􀂃 On this site is the Hoo-Hoo Pavilion housing a heritage logging truck.
􀂃 Casual night and fraternalism. Maybe a few local reds. Maybe more!
􀂃 Enjoy and meet everyone in an informal way.
DAY 3, Wednesday March 23rd, 2011.
􀂃 Depart from Southgate Motel on superior coach.
􀂃 Inspection of South West Fibre Chipping facility at Myamyn near Heywood.
􀂃 Visit Portland wood chip loading facility.
􀂃 Lunch
􀂃 Depart Portland via Prince’s Highway.
􀂃 AKD Colac site visit
􀂃 Return to TMA at Blackburn
World Forestry Day Dinner 6.29pm for 6.59pm
Keynote Speaker, Phillip Blackwell, BForSc, MFor Sc. “The potential of plantation blue gum for Sawn Timber and Engineered Wood Products”. Phillip has recently served as Wood processing and Drying Adviser with the Australian Volunteers abroad at the Forest Institute of Vietnam. He has also lectured post degree students at the University of Melbourne School of Forest Science and Ecosystems Science.
World Forestry Day is celebrated every year on this day and 2011 has been declared the International Year of Forestry.
