In March 2017, South Korea revised the Act on the Sustainable Use of Timbers, a milestone in its efforts to promote legal timber trade. The EU FLEGT Facility has published a brief that describes similarities and differences between the revised Act and the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR). Source: Timberbiz
The 2017 revisions made South Korea the first East Asian market to issue mandatory legislation that regulates the legality of imported and domestically produced timber and timber products.
The implementation of the revised Act began on 1 October 2018.
The EU FLEGT Facility brief includes some considerations on the enforcement of the Act. It also describes potential cooperation between South Korea and other regulated markets.
An annex to the brief features a table drawing a detailed comparison between the provisions of the EUTR and South Korea’s Act on the Sustainable Use of Timbers.
