Mr Chester said the bushfires had impacted communities in East Gippsland and Wellington Shire would be eligible for the funds and he intends to focus on local job-supporting projects.
“This is our chance to continue building a more resilient regional economy and I will be urging local councils and communities to focus on projects that create new jobs or support sustainable existing industries,” Mr Chester said.
“We must not waste this opportunity to secure a significant amount of Federal Government funding for local projects and we need to pressure the State Government to provide its share.”
Under the bushfire funding announcement, the Federal Government will provide $448.5 million for regional economic recovery projects; $149.7 million to support wildlife recovery and habitat restoration; $27.1 million to strengthen telecommunications; $15 million for salvage timber operations; and $13.5 million in additional mental health support.
“This is a good package of recovery projects that stems from the Federal Government’s $2 billion National Bushfire Recovery Fund and I will be working with our community to ensure Gippsland receives a fair share of the money available,” Mr Chester said.
