A $110,000 grant received earlier this year went toward the purchase of the grinder, which Ceduna Recycling manager Darren Genrich said would be able to divert as much as 600 tonnes from the landfill per year.
“Previously, the timber waste was going to landfill, but with this machine we can divert 500-600 tonnes every year,” he said.
Councils will be able to hire the machine for their timber waste, which Mr Genrich said would then be sold to the general public as timber and green tree mulch.
“It was an opportunity for everybody to see the machine and how it can dispose of timber waste,” he said. “We are happy with the machine so far and everybody at the demo was impressed with the product.
“The reason we went for this machine is it is easily movable so can be towed around and it is easily fed.”
There will be three types of mulch available to purchase, either coarse, medium or fine mulch.
Mr Genrich said it would have other benefits, such as recycling the damaged Ceduna foreshore trees set to be removed.
“Aside from the tonnage diverted from the landfill, we will also be able to do things like recycle the foreshore trees.”
