Fred Green, who would have been known to many people in the forestry and timber industry through his association with the Greenfreight transport company, passed away on 18 November.
Fred, one of many distinguished members of the Australian Contractors Hall of Fame, had a long and successful association with the industry having started the business in Myrtleford in 1960 when he took over the distribution of Mobil oil products for the area.
Greenfreight’s association with the softwood timber industry started shortly after when Fred commenced hauling finished product from the local mill to Melbourne. The business moved into harvesting and haulage of logs with the building of Australian Forest Industries large state-of-the-art sawmill in Myrtleford in 1972/3. Since then Greenfreight has grown with the Industry.
“Fred was the motivator behind this growth and the success of the company, and he will be sadly missed,” said his brother Geoff.
