Stora Enso and Lahti2017 are together leading the way in promoting and supporting sustainable events, by using renewable raw materials derived from wood and by maximising the recycling and reuse of products.
Stora Enso’s theme for Lahti2017 is ‘100% renewable for 100% sports’.
“The Centenary World Championships in Lahti will be the biggest and most memorable event during the Finland’s 100th anniversary year of independence. Stora Enso will be bringing around 8000 employees and guests to Lahti to enjoy the games and the Lahti spirit.
“We are excited to see how our renewable products and new applications can be used in Lahti − and how the Championships will take one step further on the journey towards more sustainable spectator events,” Seppo Parvi, CFO and Country Manager Finland, Stora Enso said.
Ahead of the games Stora Enso commissioned an online survey asking Finns, Swedes and Germans how responsibility and the use of renewable materials would affect their event experience as spectators.
More than 1000 people responded from each country, and samples were representative by age, gender and regions.
More than half of the respondents said they would be willing to pay more to attend an event, if they believed it would be 100% sustainable.
Two-thirds said that major events should strive for increased sustainability.
Stora Enso’s modern wooden elements can be seen at the games including the podium, the countdown clock, shelters, the main gate and the interiors of the ski jumping towers.
Stora Enso’s renewable materials and expertise are combined in many special products to be used at Lahti2017.
The medal ceremony tray is made of corrugated board, and medallists will receive beautiful and durable containers for their medals. Spectators can try out mini snow gliders made of milk carton board, and enjoy their drinks served in carton board cups.
Spectators will also be able to cheer competitors on using biocomposite stadium horns, in which renewable wood fibres are used instead of fossil-based materials.
These biocomposite horns demonstrate Stora Enso’s ability to provide an innovative and more sustainable alternative to plastics.
Stora Enso is also providing all the printing and office papers needed for Lahti2017, and has already provided book paper for new books related to the Championships.
