Paper imports for Australia and NZ

Over the year-ended May 2023, Australia’s imports of printing and communication papers decreased 14.6% to total 297.4 kt. This annual decrease means Australia’s imports fell by 50.7 kt. Source: IndustryEdge

In May 2023, Australia’s imports were up 15.6% compared with April, to total 21.0 kt. Monthly imports were 25.0% lower than in May 2022.

The first table below the chart shows that on a quarterly basis, total imports were down 27.2% over the quarter ending May, compared with the same quarter in 2022.

The situation in New Zealand is different to the Australian experience. As New Zealand has no domestic manufacturing, imports make up the full supply. Imports are somewhat erratic, with one-off spikes regularly followed by lower months.

In May 2023, imports were up 29.7% to total 5.3 kt for the month.

The chart below shows monthly imports, as well as the year-on-year changes in monthly imports.

The first table below the chart shows that on a quarterly basis, total imports were down 24.5% over the quarter ending April, compared with the same period in 2022. The second table shows that on an annualised basis, total imports were down 10.6% over the year-ended April 2023.
