Acting CEO Anshul Chaudhary said that while the proposal to rezone and develop the neighbouring land was entirely separate to Cumberland State Forest, discussions were underway to add nine hectares of privately managed forest to the public forest estate should the proposal proceed.
“I am aware that there is some confusion in the community about the proposal being considered for the former IBM site adjoining Cumberland State Forest. This proposal is wholly contained on private property and does not impact on Cumberland State Forest in any way,” Mr Chaudhary said.
“Cumberland State Forest continues to be managed for conservation and recreation, as it has been for the past 80 years. This forest is a community asset that we are proud to protect alongside the network of national parks, council bushland reserves and parkland throughout this region.
“Forestry Corporation has however been approached by Mirvac with a proposal to add some of the bushland area on their site to Cumberland State Forest.
“This bushland is largely contiguous with Cumberland State Forest and by vesting ownership in the NSW Government, this area can be added to the State-owned forest, enhancing the publicly-owned bushland available to the local community.
“We are discussing this potential arrangement with Mirvac and have confirmed our willingness to take on management of the neighbouring private forest, should they proceed with their proposal.”
The proposal to develop the privately-owned site adjacent to Cumberland State Forest is a matter for planning authorities.
Cumberland State Forest’s 40 hectares of forest, picnic areas, free barbecues, walking trails, visitor centre, community shelters, nursery, café and Tree Tops Adventure Park are not impacted by this proposal and all of the areas currently available for community access will continue to be available for the community to use and enjoy.
