According to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) creating simpler rules for the timber industry will make it easier to enforce. Source: ABC News
Peter Beaumont from the DEPI said it is not changing the rules, just developing a new framework to make them clearer.
He said the rules on timber harvesting used to be spread across 80 different documents.
Beaumont said there has been some confusion about what is required and making that clear will help enforcement.
“So hopefully what this means is if we’re ever in a situation where we think someone is not … [following] the rules, we spend more time focusing on what they need to do to address it as opposed to perhaps having disagreements about what the rules actually say,” he said.
“Industry occasionally comes to us and says, ‘look it’s not quite clear what we’re meant to do and we’d like greater certainty so we know that we’re able to comply with the rules’.
“It’s also important for the public to know our timber industry is complying with the rules as well.”
