The 21-year-old from Deloraine said he wasn’t looking at his competitors, but saw a little “ebb” out of his eye as he managed to fend off Italian Michael Del Pin in the final cut of four different disciplines.
Going into the final round Gurr was trailing Del Pin by three points and the Tasmanian had to produce his fastest ever chop to score the maximum points and win the title.
“You only get one shot at it and I am rapt,” he said, having won the standing block and under chop disciplines as well as the overall title.
In the open category, 24-year-old Mitch Argent, from Blackbutt in Queensland, was third after beating Europe’s most dominant woodchopper Martin Komerak from the Czech Republic.
Stirling Hart from Canada won the event from nine-time world champion, Jason Wynyard of New Zealand.
