Communications and stakeholder engagement manager Jennifer Eliot said the Forestry Products Commission (PFC) helps sponsor LTIC teacher education days as another way of educating the community about forestry.
“The field trips are a great way for teachers to engage with forestry as a potential subject to teach their students,” Ms. Eliot said.“Everyone was fully engaged the whole day. The school principal was so impressed with what he saw, he was very enthusiastic to promote it at the next school principals regional meeting in the following weeks.”
The teachers made comments regarding their greater appreciation of planting pine and bluegums in water catchment areas, native forest management, timber production, residue and wood chip utilisation following the field day.
The group made several stops along the timber industry supply line, including Stene’s Arboretum, Wellington Discovery Forest, Wespine Industries and WA Plantation Resource (WAPRES).
“The FPC’s own Todd Brittain even made an appearance, talking to the teachers about the native forest industry,” Ms. Eliot said.
The planning has already started for next year’s teacher field trip with LTIC aiming to kick it off at the end of January before the new school year starts.
