Yet, it’s often overlooked and taken for granted, just like the air we breathe.
But what if we told you that there’s a couple down in the Mornington Peninsula who are doing something special with this ubiquitous material?
Meet Nathan and Sarah Worth, the dynamic duo behind The Wood Project. They take salvaged trees and turn them into stunning pieces of furniture that not only look great but tell a story. These two have a passion for woodworking and sustainability, and it’s evident in every piece they create.
They take a tree that would have been landfill or chipped and turn it into a product. It’s a recyclable project and they get logs from local tree removalists, councils or farmers and salvage 80-90% of the logs.
The company makes furniture, bar tops, basically whatever the customer wants. If the log is not suitable for furniture or post and rail fencing, then it is cut up for firewood and even the sawdust is recycled.
There’s more to furniture making than just hammering some pieces of wood together. Nathan and Sarah explain that it takes time, patience, and a keen eye for detail to create something truly beautiful. And when you’re working with salvaged wood, there’s an added layer of complexity. Every piece is unique, and it takes skill and creativity to bring out the best in each one.
