The building will offer library space, two floors dedicated to childcare and a special area for startups to try out emerging manufacturing techniques.
A restaurant will occupy the top floor, offering expansive views of the city’s Tumbalong Park, the Chinese Gardens and Cockle Bay.
The building will be located at Darling Harbor, adjacent to the city center, and will include an “Innovation Exchange Program” for start-ups together with a “makerspace” that will allow people to experiment with robotics and new manufacturing technologies.
“I am very pleased that the City has reached an in-principle agreement with Lendlease for two floors of the fabulous Kengo Kuma building,” said Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney.
“The contemporary library will include a flexible space for seminars and workshops, with technology to support entrepreneurs and innovators,” she added.
The multi-use structure will be enveloped in timber screens that create dynamic forms and reference the history of the area.
A large public plaza will surround the new library and include areas for markets and retail brands.
The project was submitted for planning permission and is expected to open in 2018.
