Treasurer Jack Snelling announced today that the South Australian Government intends to proceed with the forward sale of three forest rotations in the South‐East after recommendations submitted in a Regional Impact Statement prepared by ACIL Tasman. These
recommendations are a total disregard to our community and betrayal of confidence in the consultation process.
The three Lower South East Mayors remain united in their stance to protect our local industries and local employment.
‘The conditions of the sale as suggested in the Treasurers announcement are no where near good
enough, we need the best possible outcome from the conditions to protect our communities and our industry ’ said Mayor Steve Perryman.
‘We will be requesting an urgent meeting with the Treasurer to get a detailed briefing on why,
the reasons and the justification for this decision and will remain engaged with the Treasurer to
achieve the ultimate benefit for our future by insisting on stringent sale conditions that protect jobs and the industry ’ continued Mayor Richard Sage.
‘It is critical, now that the sale is going to proceed that we have guarantees in place protecting our local industry and jobs and we will hold the State Government responsible on its previous promises to support our industry’ said Mayor Peter Gandolfi.
The waning confidence with the current State Government is now widespread throughout the region and the Mayors will be requesting a seat on the South‐East Forest Industry Roundtable, as community representatives, to keep accountability and transparency in the process and to protect the community from this decision.
