More structural timber will make it to the housing market in South Australia through two regional projects receiving state government funding. The business, which employs 75 people in Jamestown, the Riverland and Adelaide, had previously said it was at risk of going out of business if the government was unable to help meet the cost of transporting logs from Kangaroo Island.
In the new plans, the company will hire and purchase “retired equipment” and recruit and upskill staff to allow extra timber to be produced.
NewGen Timber at Mt Gambier will get $480,000 towards a $552,000 plan to provide more timber over the next year, with yard upgrades and extra shifts. The state and federal government will help cover the costs of transporting 300,000 tonnes of timber from Kangaroo Island.
