Wood and the use of renewable energy for high-energy efficiency buildings is the title of the presentation to be given by David Coote tomorrow evening at VicForests in Bourke Street, Melbourne. Source: Timberbiz
Climate change and energy security concerns in Europe are leading to increased use of renewable energy and construction of high-energy efficiency buildings.
Coote’s presentation will use the recently built Agricultural Training School at Altmunster in Upper Austria to illustrate the relevance of these themes to forestry.
The school meets the rigorous PassivHaus standard, is primarily built from locally supplied wood and achieves Near Zero Energy Building status through the use of a 400kWth biomass boiler (burning wood supplied by local farmers) and rooftop mounted solar thermal collectors and photovoltaics.
Coote will briefly describe some aspects of European community scale biomass energy production. Use of woody biomass at this scale, often run by local farmer or forestry co-operatives, is very popular in European communities as it builds energy resilience and promotes local economies.
