Best practice silviculture is creating more opportunities for timber production from regrowth karri forest. Stands of regrowth karri at Warren 1 about 15 km south west of Pemberton, were regenerated in 1972 and have just been thinned for the second time after an initial thinning in 1993. Southern Production Manager Mark Read said the recent thinning yielded about 112 tonnes of product per hectare, including 56 tonnes per hectare of veneer and saw logs. Source: Timberbiz
“Areas where thinning has been delayed show trees of suppressed growth, whereas these trees were jumping out of their skins!” Mr Read said.
“It shows the potential we can achieve when forests are managed within best practice guidelines.”
FPC Senior Managers have been looking at opportunities for forest stands like these to provide for a range of market demands.
“Given the quality of this forest, it will yield a rich mix of sawlogs,” Mr Read said.
“It is critical that we identify new markets to ensure all areas can be managed as well as Warren 1.
“If we are successful, we can increase the production of our native forests for the next generation of forest managers.”
