VANCOUVER, British Columbia(Reuters): West Fraser Timber Co (WFT.TO) will cut back production at seven of its British Columbia sawmills because of continued weak lumber demand, the company said.
The cutbacks, which will idle each of the sawmills for up to two weeks starting in mid-March, will reduce production at Canada’s largest softwood lumber producer by 44 million board feet and affect 1,160 workers.
West Fraser, which has operations in both western Canada and the U.S. Southeast, has already cut its annual production capacity in Canada by 1.1 billion board feet because of a lack of U.S. demand for housing construction lumber.
