In Korea the wood pellets will be burnt to generate electricity and for other uses.
The port’s main cargo has been the region’s sugar exports until now.
The pellets have been produced by Altus Renewables, a company based in Brisbane that specialises in the production and marketing biomassbased fuels to generate renewable energy.
While an Altus spokesman would not comment, the company has a supply agreement with a sawmill near Maryborough to buy residue and surplus wood.
Hyne owns the sawmill, it is one of Australia’s largest privately owned timber companies.
Altus has a fibre processing facility next to the sawmill, which is designed to produce 125,000 tonnes of wood pellets a year.
