Judges commented on the entire structure being prefabricated timber and the versatility of timber for both structure and aesthetics.
Housing NZ’s Clayton Avenue Apartments in Auckland also won a Highly-Commended award as an exemplar for future medium density residential mass timber housing solutions.
XLam projects dominated the Multi-Storey Timber Building Awards category.
The winner was the 5-storey Te Pa Tauira-Otago Polytechnic Student Village in Dunedin. The judges were impressed by the highly efficient modular layout enabling efficient offsite prefabrication for significantly reduced construction time, minimised waste and lower cost.
Highly Commended awards went to three other XLam projects in the Multi-Storey category, including the Clayton Avenue Apartments.
The University of Canterbury’s 3-storey Ara Kahukura, designed to make a living example of sustainable design as well as providing teaching spaces, was highlighted by the judges as an excellent testimony to the potential for hybrid timber-steel-concrete structures.
In a third awards category, Engineering Innovation, both the Kaikoura District Council building and Te Pa Tauira-Otago Polytechnic Student Village won Highly Commended awards.
